What is ArcIMS? ArcIMS provides the foundation for distributing high-end geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping services via the Internet.

When the ArcIMS site opens, the data layers present are listed on the right side in the Table of Contents. The map is visible in the center and the tools are on the left.

TURN LAYERS ON AND OFF:

Those layers that are visible have a checkmark beside them. Those that are not visible have a blank check box. You can turn on and off layers by clicking on and off each layer. In order for the changes to go into effect, you must click the Refresh Map button at the bottom of the Table of Contents.



SELECTING THE ACTIVE LAYER:

Most tools work on the active layer. The active layer is designated by the radiobutton. Above, Fish Runs is the active layer.

MOVING AROUND THE MAP:
Zoom in and Zoom Out - Draw a box or click in the map to zoom in or out.
Zoom to Full Extent - View the extent of all layers in the map.
Zoom to Active Layer - Zoom to the full extent of the Active Layer.
Back to Last Extent - Go to the previous extent.
Pan - Use the hand to move around the map.

TOOLS AND OPTIONS:

Viewing the Legend for Each Layer - The Toggle Between Legend and LayerList button toggles between the legend and layer list (what an appropriate name).
Identify - Select this tool to display the attribute table for the feature clicked. The identify tool ONLY works on the Active Layer.
Query - Select features from the Active Layer based on an attribute. For example, select all towns with an area greater than 40 square miles.
Find - Using a string, this button will select and display the attributes of all features meeting the criteria of a string. It works on the Active Layer.
Select by Rectangle - Draw a rectangle to select all features of the Active Layer that intersect or are included inside the rectangle.
Select Features - Features from the Active Layer can be selected using a line or polygon.
Clear Selected Features - Clears the selected features (if you didn't guess).
Print - Print the map including the overview window and the legend for any layers being displayed.
