9. Putting it All Together

GIS technology has made the task of map overlays so easy that it's easy to get carried away and make overly complicated GIS maps that owe more to modern art than to cartography! So, the phrase "Putting it All Together" has to be taken with a grain of salt; in some cases, it might be more of a goal than a physical reality. In this case, because tidal wetlands, migratory fish runs and SAV areas are often contiguous but rarely overlap, and because it's extremely rare (unfortunately) to have extensive areas of all three in the same stretch of coast, we can afford to put all on the same map. The choices come with the land-based information, which cannot all be overlaid on the same map. In this case, we decided to include two examples: the top map shows the coastal resources with some of the water features and the watershed-based impervious cover map; the bottom map shows the coastal and water resources contrasted with the urban growth map. As we've described on those tutorial pages, both will be useful to people trying to assess current and future threats to coastal resources. We invite you to do your own analyses, using the interactive and downloadable mapping resources on the Mapping Station site.
